I was eager to attend this session! I have an iphone 3GS that is only a few weeks old (as in time of purchase!), and we will be getting a set of 5 ipod touches on loan to our school, so I needed a jump start into the world of itunes, apps, and web sites for education. I have been using these tools for entertainment, and only recently began exploring them for use in our classrooms. And I am convinced – this tool is rich with potential!

The assistive technologies on the SNOW Leopard OS, are also on the latest generation of ipod touches, which means, with 3 taps on the screen, you can choose to turn on the voiceover “Alex” and tap on text on a web page to have it read to you; zoom in and out of the screen; or change the contrast on the screen. Additionally, you can turn your fingers like a dial on the screen and swap between audio options. The PROLOQUO2GO app enables you to create your own voice commands and correlate them with graphical buttons.

On the Apple computer, you can have Alex read back text on the screen, and simultaneously create an mp3 of the read-back. Sync your ipod, and, if you had Alex read a free e-book off of a web page, your ipod becomes a portable listening center for your students! Teachers can also record themselves reading a book in GarageBand on the laptop or using the voice memo function on the ipod, and create a customized classroom audio library for listening center time.

Couple apps that were highlighted include:
    1) Pearson mobility MATH
    2) pi83 graphing calculator
    3) NASA
    4) COURSESMART (ebooks)
    5) mobileAP, responsewhere or eclicker for whole class polling
    6) webex
    7) whiteboard
8)Stanza: a catalog of free e-books (includes the text so it flips like a book when you tap the next page, so kids can hear it read to them while they read the text)

In this session I learned about a variety of content based, interactive web sites and tools to support Massachusetts Standards and Benchmarks. The web site I thought would be great in a kinder classroom is Brain pop Jr. http://www.brainpopjr.com

I picked up a handout from BrainPop about how use of the tool improves test scores!
